ist Hoagy Carmichael is mostly featured with trios from his Decca years although there are also a few orchestral tracks. With the exception of 1951's "My Resistance Is Low" (which was a hit at the time) the music dates from 1939, 1942 and 1946-47. Hoagy performs ten of his songs including "Stardust," "Rockin' Chair," "Riverboat Shuffle," "The Old Music Master" and "Ole Buttermilk Sk. Hopefully this delightful music will someday resurface on CD in more complete fashion.
Stardust is a wonderful album, which began a series of albums that focused on a single composer. Stardust featured the music of Hoagy Carmichael. There’s a fitting symmetry implicit in Bill Charlap’s latest Blue Note release. It’s a symmetry born from purity of purpose, illuminated on 1 end by the timelessness of Hoagy Carmichael’s Americana, & asserted at the other by the clarity of Charlap’s touch.
