Béla Viktor János Bartók (25 March 1881–26 September 1945) was a Hungarian composer, pianist, and collector of Eastern European and Middle Eastern folk music. In Hungarian, the family name precedes the first name, . Bartók was born in Nagyszentmiklós, Kingdom of Hungary, Austria-Hungary (after 1920 Sânnicolau Mare, România).

Bartók’s parents were teachers and amateur musicians This signalled a childhood that saw young Béla actively composing by the age of nine. He gave his first public piano recital just two years later. But the passionately patriotic 17-year-old opted instead for the Budapest Royal Academy of Music. Such was his astonishing rate of progress that by the time he graduated in 1903 he was confidently composing in the Liszt/Richard Strauss orchestral mould, and was seemingly aware of his musical destiny: For my own part, I shall have one objective: the good of Hungary and the Hungarian nation. Bartók formed a musical alliance with Zoltán Kodály and set about collecting Hungarian folksongs.

Romanian Folk Dances, Sz. 56. Romanian Folk Dances (Hungarian: Román népi táncok), Sz. 56 (also BB 68) is a suite of six piano pieces written in 1915 by Béla Bartók. He later orchestrated it for small ensemble in 1917 as Sz. 68, (BB 76). The pieces are based on seven Romanian tunes from Transylvania, originally played on fiddle or shepherd's flute. The original name for the piece was titled Romanian Folk Dances from Hungary (Magyarországi román népi táncok) but was later changed by Bartók when Romania annexed Transylvania in 1918-1920. Is Béla Bartók the 20th century’s most neglected composer. There are so many different aspects – Bartók the virtuoso pianist, Bartók the great folk music collector, and the Bartók who was fascinated by mathematics and used the golden mean in his music. And then there’s Bartók the refugee in America during the war years, when he became the archivist of the great folk song collection at Columbia University in New York. Bartók’s music can be unbelievably expressive and deeply touching, as well as very radical, and I hope our series will redress the balance, Salonen says.
