Less of a horn-drenched affair than his Black Top albums, New Role Soul presents Robert Ward in a smaller, looser setting that definitely works to his advantage. Instead of taking the usual s approach, the producers let Ward create on the fly, and the results easily rank up there with his 1990 comeback album Fear No Evil. For most of New Role Soul Ward is backed by just a three-piece rhythm section of bass, drums, and organ, leaving plenty of room for his testifying vocals and Magnatone-enhanced guitar

On all other tracks a Fender Vibrolux amplifier is used. Recorded August 28-30, 1999 at Riverside Studios. Other Versions (1 of 1) View All. Cat.

Robert Ward set an awfully high benchmark with his 1990 release Fear No Evil, a comeback album now considered a classic. New Role Soul is the work of a somewhat mellower man who remains an incredible musician at age 64. Propelled by the leader’s intricate guitar playing and animated vocals, this CD sounds better with each spin. Ward has perfected one of the most original guitar sounds in the blues, thanks in part to his use of Magnatone amplifier. His singing is equally distinctive, though more of an acquired taste. There’s no question the man pours a lot of soul into his music.

On New Role Soul, Ward's bubbling, vibrato guitar lines are fluid and snappy, his vocals even sweeter on top and rougher on the bottom than before, his grooves deeper than ever. The session features able support from Kevin McKendree, whose organ work provides crucial texture and an effective second lead opposite Ward's guitar
