Back in 1995, Rhino released a set called Funkify Your Life: The Meters Anthology, a double-disc compilation that rounded up 43 singles and album tracks in what appeared to be the final word on the seminal New Orleans soul band. Released some 21 years later, Real Gone Music's Message from the Meters: The Complete Josie, Reprise & Warner Bros. Singles 1968-1977 is a little more exacting in its approach: it focuses just on songs that made their way to a 7", so it excises the longer loose-limbed jams and demonstrations of instrumental prowess showcased on Funkify Your Life.

The Meters, like Booker T. & The MGs, were successful backing other artists, and had hits and plenty of great material on their own as well, including lots of memorable instrumental numbers. Singles 1968-1977 is a two-disc set featuring much of the band’s best material, produced by Marshall E. Sehorn and Allen Toussaint. The first disc contains the Josie singles, and the second disc has the Reprise and Warner Bros. This set includes liner notes by Bill Dahl

Tracks 1-9 (Look-Ka Py Py) and 1-21 (Good Old Funky Music) are mixes that I’ve never heard elsewhere. I emailed Real Gone about this and they assured me that these are the original mono single mixes. 1-9 lacks any vocals during the intro and 1-21 is a full minute longer than ANY copy of the 45s I’ve ever heard. (There is an unedited master take of this song available and the version heard here is the same as that one only faded out earlier.) I still contend that these are mixing errors and NOT what Real Gone claims them to be! (Not sure if these same anomalies exist on the vinyl version of the set.)

$55 black vinyl version coming out 27 oct. :)

$190? What the .. .. .. .. .. .. ..?

Big Meters fan and spent considerable time and effort to track this down at store regional to me. Very happy to report that the 200 mile day trip it took and slight mark-up I paid (no where near the $200 flipper prices) were very much worth it. Sounds fantastic.

https://roughtrade.com/music/the-complete-josie-reprise-and-warner-bros-singles-1968-1977Here's a listing with new copies of this for sale in the U.K. Shipping and conversion will probably be a bitch to the states, but it will be cheaper than what these flippers are asking.

  • Pooker
It's prob an awesome record but THIS is what's wrong with Discogs. People jack up the price to $245 for something that they just got for less than $50! Thanks for artificially inflating record prices.
  • Malien
Yep, totally agree. For that price you could nearly buy OG copies of the actual albums. Only way to stop this madness is to starve these vultures.
  • Isha
It sucks only 1,000 copies were made. I'd love to have this, but I'm not paying $200-$300 for it from some flipper.
  • Ndyardin
Can anyone comment on the quality of this release? Trying to track it down
  • Hucama
Thanks guys. Happy to report I snagged a copy and listened to the entire thing already. It rolls out of the speakers. What an amazing Record Store Day
  • Hurus
I think it sounds absolutely spectacular. This is easily one of my most cherished records in my entire collection. I'm so glad I was lucky enough to get this from my local shop.
  • Bundis
My pressing sounds absolutely fantastic, the Josie disc in particular.
  • Doath
My pressing is super quiet and clean. Really enjoying it.
  • Yla
Like the others have said...it sounds incredible. According to Real Gone Music they found original tapes of all but 5 songs and that the mastering is tight. The first three sides are mono and the rest are stereo (the warner/reprise stuff). I hope they repress so more people can enjoy this.
  • Styphe
Yes, I recommend it as well, excellent press quality. So groovy too...
  • Ces
This record sounds amazing. No noise whatsoever, great pressing. I recommend it.
