Hardcore Alex Chilton fans understand the mysteries of music better than most. They don’t need dry ice or laser lights to enjoy a rock ‘n’ roll show. But the fun (the audience never stops laughing) of hearing Chilton struggle to remember old country songs, unexpected pop songs (The Beach Boys’ Wouldn’t It Be Nice, Surfer Girl," and Solar System ), and even Joni Mitchell’s A Case of You is a moment in time worth preserving. Loudon Wainwright III’s Motel Blues is the one song that could be called expected, and it's performed like Chilton still had a hellhound on his trail.

All of this brings us to the 2013 release of Electricity by Candlelight, the proper release of the audio from that incredibly intimate, one-of-a-kind set. The sound quality is bootleg at best, even in professionally mastered form. Were this a run-of-the-mill set, the sound alone would push this release into the "completists only" category, as vocals are muddy and sometimes drowned out by the giggling and caterwauling of the audience.

save your money! as much as I love AC, this LP might only be a nice souvenir for those who spent that very evening with chilton. for the rest of the world it's what it is: a bad sounding live-cut.

Electricity By Candlelight is an excellent recording that captures Alex at his most laid back and friendly; the man behind the myth, or as he had come to be known, "The Last True American Hero". From his taking requests from the audience, songs which he may have never played before, their accompanying him as he played, and to his lighthearted, and often humorous banter with them, this is the one performance fans who hear it will wish they had been there to experience. Hearing it in this release will almost make this seem so.
