Overlook is the fourth album by Maria Taylor, released on August 16, 2011 on Saddle Creek Records. After moving back to her hometown of Birmingham, Taylor was unable to write for nearly a year, eventually composing the entire album over two weeks during a break in touring with Azure Ray. This release marks the first time Taylor produced her own album.
It was released in October 2009, just under a year after the initial release of Fearless. In addition to the extra songs, the release came with a DVD of music videos, behind-the-scenes footage, and pictures taken by her brother Austin.
Sheet Music and Tabs for Maria Taylor. Maria Diane Taylor (born May 21, 1976) is an American singer/songwriter from Birmingham, Alabama. She is also a member of the duo Azure Ray, with Orenda Fink, and Now It's Overhead, both on Saddle Creek Records. She plays several instruments, including the piano, guitar, and drums. Listen to it, she says in a dark room, with a candle or two with headphones, maybe in the bath, but definitely horizontal.
Guided by her indomitable inner compass, Maria Taylor moved home to Birmingham, AL, last year, back to her family and to the South, which has always greatly influenced her music. With a distinct, raw sound in mind, Taylor self-produced for the first time and called upon friend and neighbor Lester Nuby III (Verbena, Vulture Whale) to engineer Overlook. She sought to capture the sound of the South, of Alabama and its music scene, enlisting a host of local musicians to flesh out the album.
Taylor Swift has unveiled quite a few surprises of late-moving from Nashville to New York, ditching the country format that elevated her to superstar status, and even trying her hand at rapping in new album 1989. I like to look at albums as being sort of statements, she told Billboard. Visually, sonically, emotionally, I like them all to have their own fingerprint. This time I'm kind of just doing whatever I feel like. There hasn’t been a single platinum album this year, unless you count the Frozen soundtrack. All of this leads some industry observers to suspect that 1989 could be the last platinum album ever. I would like to believe that this recent achievement could be a sign of more to come, says entertainment attorney Lori Landew of Fox Rothschild. I tend to believe that it is more an aberration that can be attributed to a super strong and loyal fan base.
Maria Taylor's career runs through four albums with the band Azure Ray, a bunch of EPs and singles, and six full-length solo records, the latest of which she's releasing herself. She's also relatively newly married with two young children, so she's bound to be in a reflective state of mind. To process it all, she's made perhaps her warmest and most affecting album, In The Next Life, and filled it with gorgeous, touching songs about family, legacy, fear and the pursuit of contentment.
