Hurt died on November 2, 1966, of a heart attack, in hospital at Grenada, Mississippi Style. Hurt used a fast, syncopated fingerpicking style of guitar playing that he taught himself. The first track of John Fahey's 1968 solo acoustic guitar album Requia is "Requiem for John Hurt". Fahey's posthumous live album, The Great Santa Barbara Oil Slick, also features a version of the piece, entitled "Requiem for Mississippi John Hurt". The British folk and blues artist Wizz Jones recorded a tribute song, "Mississippi John", for his 1977 album Magical Flight

This album represents the FIRST recordings John made, his recordings that led to his rediscovery in 1963, and the recordings that made his name. A1, A2 recorded in Memphis, Feb. 14, 1928. A3 to A6 recorded in New York, Dec. 21, 1928. A7 and B1 to B6 recorded in New York, Dec. 28, 1928.

Mississippi John Hurt recorded 13 country-blues songs for the Okeh Electric Records company in 1928. Actually, he never left his hometown of Avalon, Mississippi. He simply put the guitar down. It was the Great Depression, times were tough, money was scarce, and he needed to work. Nearly 30 years later, a blues enthusiast tracked him down and took him back to Washington, . Suddenly, Mississippi John's musical career resumed as quickly as it had been halted.

Mississippi John Hurt's latter-day recordings after his rediscovery have somewhat obscured the importance of these debut sides - the ones that made his rediscovery an idea initially worth pursuing. Archival recordings such as Avalon Blues: The Complete 1928 Okeh Recordings are the collector's items that made his rep in the first place, and stand as some of the most poetic and beautiful of all country blues recordings.
