This is an excellent work by Xymox. Songs like ''The Shore Down Under'' and ''Believe Me Sometimes'' are the heart and soul of this album. These songs are melancholic and you can feel the emotions through these ones. 'At The End Of The Day'' is a more pop oriented song like ''Smile Like Heaven''. Ronny Moorings and Anka wilbert voices are incredible and clearer than on previous records. Only thing missing on this album is their b-side ''Twisted''

The album was limited to 500 copies. Xymox then became the opening act for Dead Can Dance in England. The band's presence on Dead Can Dance's . tour caught the interest of 4AD Records, and the label eventually signed them. A year later, Xymox lengthened their name to Clan of Xymox and recorded a self-titled album in 1985, followed by Medusa the next year. In 1987, the group shortened its appellation to Xymox once again, contributing another version of "Muscoviet Mosquito," originally on Subsequent Pleasures, to the 4AD compilation Lonely Is an Eyesore. The 2004 collection The Best of Clan of Xymox found latter-day highlights next to re-recordings of the band's early material. Two years later, the album Breaking Point was announced by the single "Weak in My Knees. Their 2009 effort, In Love We Trust, was a return to the layered sound of their 4AD years.

The gloominess and overtly European qualities that had characterized early Xymox remained, though Xymox was definitely thinking in terms of the pop/rock audience. Phoenix may not be the most original CD in the world, but that doesn't prevent it from being consistently enjoyable. Ronny Moorings. 3. The Shore Down Under.

Phoenix is the fourth studio album by Dutch dark wave band Xymox, released in 1991 by Wing Records/PolyGram. It was produced by Peter Walsh. Guitarist Michael Brook guested on the tracks "The Shore Down Under and "Mark the Days".

Xymox, without Nooten and Wolbert, left PolyGram to release the UK acid house inspired LPs Metamorphosis (1992) and Headclouds (1993) independently. These albums marked a break from the dark wave sound of the 1980s and met with poor record sales in the United States, which had moved towards a markedly different grunge sound at the time. Ronny Moorings toured under the banner of Xymox until 1994 with an evolving cast of live musicians, including girlfriend and future band member Mojca Zugna  . At the End of the Day" (Maxi CD and 12", Wing, 1991). Out of the Rain" (Maxi CD, Tess, 1997). This World" (Maxi CD, Tess, 1998).
