The Adversary is the debut solo album by Emperor frontman Ihsahn. Released on 10 April 2006, it is the first in a conceptual trilogy of albums including angL and After. It features a guest vocal appearance by Ulver's Garm. The album has been noted for its stylistic diversity, encompassing extreme metal as well as progressive and classic metal influences. In the case of former Emperor vocalist/lead guitarist Ihsahn, The Adversary is definitely an example of "something in between. This 2006 release, which is the Norwegian headbanger's first solo project, is neither a carbon copy of Emperor's black metal nor a radical departure from it. The Adversary has a lot to offer from a black metal standpoint, and yet, this is hardly a disc that caters to black metal purists.

It proves hard to categorize, due to the varied mix of styles incorporated, but in general the album is mainly rooted in progressive metal. Other styles mixed into this album include death metal, black metal, classic metal (in the vein of Iron Maiden, King Diamond and Mercyful Fate), symphonic metal, and on some tracks there is a strong thrash metal influence.
