Van der Linden was born not far from Amsterdam, in The Netherlands.

Rick van der Linden (5 August 1946, Badhoevedorp, North Holland - 22 January 2006, Groningen) was a Dutch composer and keyboardist. Van der Linden first gained fame as a member of Ekseption, but he played in several other bands including most notably Trace, as well as solo. Van der Linden was best known for his reworkings of classical music in a pop music domain, often with jazz improvisations.

Rick van der Linden (b. Badhoevedorp (NL), August 5, 1946 - d. Groningen (NL), January 22, 2006) was a Dutch composer and keyboard player. Van der Linden became famous as a member of Ekseption, but played in several other bands including Trace, as well as solo. His compositions were often popular reworkings of classical music by Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven.

Rick van der Linden was the second of five van der Linden children. His family moved when Rick was only 5 weeks old to Rotterdam, where they lived until 1957. Rick started piano lessons at age 7, but gave them up two years later because he wasn't enjoying them. Rick van der Linden released several solo albums, most reworkings of classical music in the Ekseption style (In 1981, a solo album, and in 1985 issued the LP "Old Friends, New Friends"). He remained one of Holland's best known rock musicians of his generation, and performed session work with artists such as Joachim Kuhn, Deep Purple, Phil Collins, Vangelis, Jack Lancaster and Brand X. In 1995 Rick van der Linden was struck by a CVA and was partly paralyzed as a result. He died on January 22, 2006 in Groningen, and was buried in Hoogeveen.

By the age of 20, Rick van der Linden was writing music for ballet companies and playing as a guest soloist with various orchestras, performing music by Bach, Beethoven, Rachmaninov, et. al, but was also playing rock & roll, and jazz piano and organ, with various ensembles, including his own trio. He finally settled into the lineup of a band called the Occasional Swing Combo, and it was while playing with this group that he crossed paths with a jazz-oriented band known as the Incrowd  . In 1981, he released a solo album, and in 1985, he issued the LP Old Friends, New Friends. 2006 saw the release of Wild Connections with Blodwyn Pig's Jack Lancaster, and an Ekseption best-of CD/DVD, Story of Ekseption.
