Bill Callahan's second post-Smog album feels unusually intimate and contains some of the most varied arrangements of his career. The darkness that falls over Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle does not make it a Smog record- it is an uncommonly gentle darkness that sounds light at first blush. Smog's malevolence seemed like a sweeping indictment of human nature, but here, Callahan's lyrics feel intensely personal. The record, an evident break-up affair, has such a strong air of private conversation that listening to it feels like eavesdropping; the second-person pronouns sail right past us to strike the target of the absent beloved

Butwhere Woke On A Whaleheart tended towards gothic country, Sometimes IWish We Were An Eagle introduces some beautiful orchestral flourishesthat offset Callahan’s gravely voice perfectly. When Bill Callahan left behind his long held Smog moniker, he gave longtime fans of his lo-fi, mopey, sometimes angry aesthetic some real cause for worry: there was not only the name change, but the reliance on more technology that began with the Diamond Dancer EP and the outright lush production (compared to his past work) on Woke on a Whaleheart. Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle should give them some cause for relief, though the growth on the previous two offerings cannot be erased. There is no grand statement on Eagle; it's merely the record that comes after Woke on a Whaleheart, but.
