But the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter found evidence of plenty of ice under the martian surface. In fact, it's a frozen slab with a land area equal to Texas and 13 stories thick. The slab is located in the northern hemisphere of Mars, running between the equator and the north pole. Strange craters dotting the surface pointed to an assemblage of material underneath, and radar studies revealed an ice slab just barely under the surface. The leading culprit is ancient snowfalls that never melted as the Martian climate cooled
But this time there is news from a far more reliable source revealing a giant 13 feet thick slab of ice, spread over an area same as Texas and California combined, right under the surface of Mars. It is believed that the reason for the formation of such a gargantuan glacier buried under the surface, is a snowfall that occurred tens of millions of years ago. The discovery came after the rare phenomenon of terraced craters, as opposed to the more common bowl shaped craters, were noticed
For humans have just discovered water ice at much shallower depths than previously thought. But Ali Bramson of the University of Arizona’s Lunar and Planetary Laboratory (LPL) dispelled the sensationalism – and offered something better: an enormous slab of water ice, measuring 130 feet thick. Bramson explained the initial confusion: Craters should be bowl-shaped, but this one had terraces in the wall.
The blue triangle outlined in black in the middle is the purported lake. Orosei and colleagues spotted the lake after years of analyzing data from the European Space Agency’s Mars Express orbiter, which aims radar at the planet to see below its surface. But Mars’ south polar ice behaves differently than earthly ice in other ways too, Smith says. It doesn’t flow the way you would expect from tightly packed glaciers. Porous ice might explain why it flows differently, and more dust and other impurities in the ice could make up for the difference in density.

A test Tuesday found that the ice recovered sublimates away over a few hours if left in the scoop. The team is practicing the best and fastest way to get enough ice sample into the scoop and to the TEGA oven before it sublimates (goes from solid to gas- like dry ice)
