Sitting in this empty room Upon a tattered chair With nobody but the man in the mirror Wishing he could be somebody else The oh-so-righteous one. Mumbling dreams to himself Each one conflicting with the next There is nothing linear within these hopes for one's self. Everything becomes nonsensical and incoherant If you listen long enough Hopes are easily weighed futile when there aren't any true goals. But nonetheless I still expect you to dream on And excel towards nothing My childish friend.

Arriving six years after his widely acclaimed debut A Sufi and a Killer and four years after mini-album M. Z. LE, Callus is the third studio album from eclectic, shamanic vocalist/producer Gonjasufi (Sumach Ecks). As with his previous releases, the album is a heady, incredibly trippy blend of psychedelic rock, dub echo, Afro-punk, and severely bugged-out hip-hop, spearheaded by his own unmistakable vocals. While his debut was entirely produced by the Gaslamp Killer, Mainframe, and Flying Lotus, his subsequent works have seen him drift away from the California beat scene.

Ever since A Sufi and a Killer sent his scarred wail out into a wider world, Gonjasufi’s future has seemed pretty open-ended. Gone are the samples he usually mixes in and reworks in favour of a sound that is uniquely and distinctly his: Callus, instead, is an album he hopes other people will one day sample themselves. It was exhausting making the recor. t was probably the hardest piece of art I’ve had to work on he says, and at an epic 19 tracks long, it’s perhaps no wonder.

Written by Simon Tucker6 August, 2016. The latest album from the cosmic singer/producer/DJ is his most soul-bearing and cathartic to date. As we reach the middle section of the album we are presented with what is the standout song in the shape of Poltergeist. There is a swirling beauty to this song which uses Asian/African themes and musical motifs to devastating effect. Vinaigrette takes us back to America and is another song whose heart lay on the dance-floor. It also happens to be the most positive sounding song on the entire album and gives you as a listener a second wind. We continue with propulsion on the driving house of Devils (house music but not as we know it) and the experimental instrumental Surfinfinity.

Callus is deliberately abrasive proof of this: an album that’s disorienting at its catchiest, harrowing at its ugliest, and more than willing to run both of those modes at the same time. Gonjasufi’s described this album as a document of his effort to embrace hate and pain, not out of nihilism or defeatism but as a way to endure what he sees as a surplus of the stuff getting dumped on everybody’s heads so he can return it as love.
