Second law of thermodynamics has been listed as a level-5 vital article in Science, Physics. If you can improve it, please do. This article has been rated as C-Class. Earth is not an isolated system. The warm temperatures at lower altitudes are maintained by input of solar energy. So there is no violation of the laws of thermodynamics. agr (talk) 21:53, 6 July 2018 (UTC). An idea similar to your balloon example already exists: see drinking bird. Should mention that the album The Second Law by Muse be mentioned as being name after this? Muse on the 2nd law of thermodynamics Jump to media player Muse's drummer Dom Howard has described the band's new album as a "positive struggle" against the 2nd Law of thermodynamics. The band has been based in London's Air Studio's for the last year to make their sixth studio album, The 2nd Law. Howard told the BBC's Tim Masters about the band's inspirations drawn from the world of science. Video journalist: Rachel Curtis.

The second law of thermodynamics specifies the characteristic change in the entropy of a system undergoing a real process. For a system without exchange of matter with the surroundings, the change in system entropy exceeds the heat exchanged with the surroundings, divided by the temperature of the surroundings.

The second law of thermodynamics can also be stated that "all spontaneous processes produce an increase in the entropy of the universe". However, this law is referring to isolated systems only, and the earth is not an isolated system or closed system. This connects to how the second law and cosmology are related, which is explained well in the video below.

Rather, the second law says that the total entropy of the whole system must increase. Any decrease of entropy (like the water freezing into ice cubes in your freezer) must be compensated by an increase in entropy elsewhere (the heat released into your kitchen by the refrigerator). It speeds the processes of breakdown and decay. If we perform a similar calculation using the earth's biomass, instead of the mass of the oceans, we find that the second law of thermodynamics will only be violated if the entire biomass is somehow converted from a highly disorganized state (say, a gas at 10,000 K) to a highly organized state (say, absolute zero) in about a month or less.

Therefore, both evolutionary theory and the second law of thermodynamics cannot both be correct. 6. Physics is a more basic or well-established field than biology. Since life has had 4 billion years to evolve on Earth, the theory of evolution does not appear to be threatened by the second law of thermodynamics.
